Bird Diversity in Campus of South China Agricultural University

  • From March 2021 to February 2022, the line transect method was used to survey the diversity of birds on the campus of South China Agricultural University once a month.The species of birds were counted based on the survey data of birds on the campus before 2021.A total of 206 species of birds belong to 15 orders and 60 families were recorded.Passeriformes predominated among them were dominant, which accounted for 69.90%.The avian fauna analysis showed that 102 species were the birds of the Oriental realm, 61 species were the birds of the palaearctic realm and 43 species were widely distributed species.Of these birds, 94 species were resident birds, 63 species were winter visitors, 27 species were summer visitors and 22 species were passage migrants.The ecotype was dominated by the songbirds, and the diet habit was dominated by insectivorous.Zosterops japonicus and Turdus mandarinus were the dominate species.There are 1 species of national Class Ⅰ protected birds, and 23 species of national Class Ⅱ protected birds.The diversity index was calculated from data collected between March 2021 and February 2022.Of the 6 distinct habitats of South China Agricultural University, the order of Shannon diversity index was Forest> Cropland> Lake> Grassland> Residential area> Teaching area.The order of Pielou evenness index was Forest> Lake> Cropland> Residential area> Grassland> Teaching area.Grassland and Lake had the highest similarity(0.738), Forest and Cropland had the lowest similarity(0.337).In different seasons, the order of Shannon diversity index was autumn> spring> winter> summer, and the order of Pielou evenness index was spring> summer> autumn=winter.The results showed that the bird resources in South China Agricultural University were abundant and had high protection value.To provide good habitats for birds, it was suggested to plan the campus reasonably and maintain the diversity of campus ecological types.
