A Study of Mammal Diversity and Spatial Utilization of Muntiacus reevesi Using Camera Trapping in the Tengshan Nature Reserve, Yongtai, Fujian Province

  • To investigate the mammal diversity and the habitat use patterns of Muntiacus reevesi in the Tengshan Provincial Nature Reserve, Yongtai, the reserve was divided into 212 1 km2 grids and 106 infrared cameras were deployed to conduct a camera trapping survey. From September 2020 to December 2021, with a total survey effort of 12283 camera-days, 23 mammal species belonging to 6 orders and 13 families were recorded, and Hylopetes phayrei was recorded for the first time in the reserve.Among the detected large-and medium-sized wild mammals, Muntiacus reevesi presented the highest relative abundance index (RAI=32.52), followed by Sus scrofa (RAI=9.34), Melogale moschata (RAI=8.76), and Paguma larvata (RAI=5.17).The grid occurrence rate of Muntiacus reevesi was 94.20% in the reserve.Across the reserve, the central Tengshan area was more utilized by Muntiacus reevesi, while the north Tengshan area, the west Xialujian area, and the central Donghujian area were less utilized. The difference of spatial utilization of Muntiacus reevesi in different areas might relate to food resource abundance and intensity of human disturbance. This study systematically investigated the background data of large-and medium-sized wild mammals in the Tengshan Nature Reserve, Yongtai, Fujian, and provided the basis for wildlife monitoring and protection management of the reserve.
