Abstract
To investigate the growth and distribution characteristics of root systems of Ilex asprella seeding under different slope popisions and soil depths,a survey and analysis were conducted from March 2021 to February 2022 in a three-year-old Ilex asprella forest in Rezhe Village,Rezhe Town,Pingyuan County,Meizhou City. The survey focused on the number of roots, root length, and root thickness at different slope positions and soil depths. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the number of roots between different slope positions, but there was a significant difference among different soil depths. There was no significant difference in root length and thickness among different slope positions. The growth of root length and thickness of three-year-old Ilex asprella seedings exhibited a characteristic of a single peak growth and followed a quadratic growth pattern. Overall, the results indicate that under red soil conditions, the distribution of the root system,as well as the root length and thickness of Ilex asprella seedings, are not affected by slope positions. Therefore,Ilex asprella seeding can be planted at any slope position on the mountain.
