Study on Repellency of Leguminous Plant Ethanol Extracts Against Culex pipiens pallens

  • In order to develop new mosquito repellent of plant origin,on the campus of Jiangxi Agricultural University in 2021,the repellent activity of ethanol extracts from ten Leguminous plants on female adult Culex pipiens pallen was tested, including Sophora japonica Linn,Cercis chinensis Bunge,Senna surattensis,Gymnocladus chinensis Baill.,Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet,Sophora japonica Pendula,Bauhinia hupehana,Albizia julibrissin Durazz.,Lespedeza Formosa,Desmodium caudatum, using the self-made insect repellency testing device in the laboratory. The results were as follows: the four plant extracts of Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet,Cercis chinensis Bunge,Senna surattensis,Gymnocladus chinensis Baill.had better repellent effect on female Culex pipiens pallens in ten Leguminous plants. Repellent effect of Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet on adult Culex pipiens pallens was the best (repellent rate 78.66%),followed by Cercis chinensis Bunge (repellent rate 70.95%).Meanwhile,three Leguminous plant extracts from Albizia julibrissin Durazz.,Desmodium caudatum,Lespedeza formosa can induce female Culex pipiens pallens, and Lespedeza formosa had the strongest attractive effect (repellent rate -55.67%). Two plant extracts from Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet and Cercis chinensis Bunge had better repellent effects on Culex pipiens pallens, and had the potential to be developed as mosquito repellents. The plant extracts from Lespedeza Formosa had a good attractive effect on Culex pipiens pallens, and had the potential to be developed as mosquito attractants.
