Abstract:
This study produced composite decorative veneers using modified polyethylene resin as the adhesive, with nonwoven fabric, kraft paper, impregnated paper,or aluminum foil as the backing materials. The peel strength, dip peel performance,cross-grain tensile strength, flexibility, and waterproofing properties were analyzed and compared with samples prepared using urea-formaldehyde resin and PVA adhesive. The results show that when the backing materials are nonwoven fabric or impregnated paper, the peel strength of the polyethylene resin samples show no significant difference compared to those with urea-formaldehyde resin or PVA adhesive. When the backing material is kraft paper with lower wet strength, the peel strength of the polyethylene resin samples is superior to that of the urea-formaldehyde resin and PVA adhesive samples. When aluminum foil is used as the backing material, the peel strength of the polyethylene resin samples reaches 0.93 N·mm
-1,while the urea-formaldehyde resin or PVA adhesive fails to form an effective bond with aluminum foil(peel strength ≤ 0.10 N·mm
-1).The polyethylene resin samples meets the type I requirements for dip peel performance, demonstrates better waterproofing properties, and exhibits superior moisture resistance compared to the urea-formaldehyde resin and PVA adhesive samples. When nonwoven fabric with lower strength is used as the backing material, the cross-grain tensile strength of the polyethylene resin samples is significantly improved relative to the urea-formaldehyde resin and PVA adhesive samples. When the surface veneer thickness is smaller(0.20 mm),the polyethylene resin provides better improvement in flexibility compared to urea-formaldehyde resin and PVA adhesive.
